I’d like to think I’m not addicted to my phone but my 7 year old declaring that I’m “always on my phone” was a wakeup call. So what should an outed phone abuser then do? Why download an app of course….but this time, it was one that would tell me exactly where I spend my IT time. It’s been confronting– and slowing down feels better physically and mentally.
So, read on for FIVE good reasons to cut down your addiction – and FIVE easy fixes
1. Text Neck – The more extreme the bend in your neck, the more dangerous the load on nerves, muscles and bones in your neck – too much is literally texting our way to neck pain.
EASY FIX: Hold your phone up in front of your face.
-Use a PC or desk top for the things that aren’t urgent.
-Monitor, schedule or quit ‘Random Phone Checking’
-Fight fire with fire -TRY a usage monitor app like ‘Quality Time’.
2. Spine Pain, Posture and Repetitive Strain injuries
Whether it’s your Facebook Finger, your mouse hand or sciatica, these can be distracting, painful injuries. Computers that are set up properly, are usually better than your phone or device
TRY INSTEAD – Do the FAT FREE MAMA Text Maniac Stretch out (click here) regularly.
-Elevate your screen and use a wireless keyboard and mouse
-Use both hands when using your phone or tablet
-Do a posture check and actively try to relax your neck when you use.
3. Eye Pain and Strain
The blue light emissions from screens can lead to headaches, damaged vision and even Macular Degeneration. These are particularly dangerous to children, as they don’t have natural protection.
TRY INSTEAD – Blink regularly
-Look away every 20 minutes to give your eyes a rest
-Use non-prescription glasses and ask about blue filter protection in children’s prescriptions
4. Kids & Teen Obsession
Some kids get bored or annoying and so we give them a screen.
There is a lot of research on the developmental implications of too much screen time for children so they really need guidance and good examples.
TRY INSTEAD – Set up a desk top and use school tablets with wireless keyboards and mouse.
– Have everyone surrender devices to a common area once they’re home.
– Use parental control apps available and restrict what and when kids can see/use.
– Hang out together instead.
5. Relationship Breakdown
Have you seen that you tube video where the guys check his phone constantly when with his girl? I cringed with familiarity when I saw it.
TRY INSTEAD -Set yourself a curfew
– Put it down when you are talking to someone
– Buy an alarm and charge up in another room to resist temptation
Cut down for a trial period and see what happens – maybe you can devote some of that extra time to exercise or a mini date with your friends or family. Don’t forget to try this short, easy stretch routine to keep you from stiffening up when you do use the phone, and let me know how you go.
