Do you wake up stiff, still tired or in pain? Sleeping habits you started as a kids may be adversely affecting your posture, energy levels, immune system, love life, work and ability to cope with stress. check out this list of sleeping habits and see how fixing them will give you more energy than you know what to do with.
The Freefall Sleeper.
The freefall sleeper lies on her stomach. According to health information website Healthline.com, this affects the spine and nervous system, causing numbness, pain and injury. Turning your head (to breathe) will also put your neck out of alignment. It’s really important to fix this one. It’s tough, but reversible. Expect to have a few (maximum 12) pretty rough night’s sleep but consistency will pay off (and save you in physio fees).
The Tooth Grinder (sleep bruxism)
Not only expensive in the dental department, this can lead to a bunch of other problems like TMJ (lock jaw), neck pain, earache, stress and feelings of anxiety. You can address this problem with a mouth guard, jaw aligning therapies and I had some personal success with hypnosis. It’s not always an emotional trigger – alcohol, stress, caffeine, sleep apnoea and snoring can also generate the grind.
According to Snore Australia (www.snoreaustralia.com.au)) Snoring can be caused by allergies, eating too much at night, nasal congestion, being overweight, consumption of alcohol, sleeping tablets and sleeping position. It can also be a sign of Sleep apnoea, which affects 4% of men and 2% of women every year. Often linked to heart disease, apnoea can be life threatening, so get it checked out.
The problem that keeps on giving. Whether it’s sparked by habit, negative self-talk, hormonal imbalances (like menopause), shift work, certain medicine or stress – insomnia can make you so frazzled that the problems escalate. The FIX: Confronting as it may be, hunt down and face the problem. Make sure you don’t exercise, drink booze, eat or watch T.V too close to bed time and do create a sleep ritual for yourself. Not everything will work first time. Your body is telling you something and with patience and consistency – you really can figure it out. Herbal supplements have shown to work and there are pharmaceuticals that you can temporarily take to help you create new patterns. Exercise and proper nutrition also play a huge role.
In all of these sleep problems, listen to how you talk about the situation. Regularly declaring that you “NEVER sleep through the night” simply embeds the problem deeper.
In all cases, whether it’s dental advice, therapy, getting regular exercise and proper nutrition or learning to calm your mind, when you get it right, you’ll realise what you’ve been missing.
