Life can be jam packed from some – less so for others, yet most of us feel ‘busy’. Excuse makers fall into 2 categories: Blamers (no money, no time, too many kids) and Saboteur’s (missed the train, my baby threw up on my trainers).
At Fat Free Mama we love to exercise, but we also love to hang out, eat food and sleep in, so we understand the desire to get out of just about anything that prevents us from sleeping longer or eating more, so next time your excuse muscle starts to kick in, try these!
What do you really dislike?
It may not be that you hate the gym – only that you hate carrying your gym kit around all day – or maybe you don’t like the lady who runs the creche? List your obstacles and make yourself list at LEAST three solutions for each obstacle.
Fix the ‘problem’
It may sound obvious, but try something different/cheaper/more fun/at home/involving the kids. Find an exercise partner or babysitter and remind yourself how much better you feel when you exercise regularly. A health professional can help you find a balance of exercise and life and an ipod can make the time fly.
Stay ‘in the moment’ when you exercise – try a running commentary of joy instead of dread (…. “this is a nice blue carpet…how nice that the receptionist knows my name ….how lovely to have a minute alone…” ). Honest observations you will feel wonderful, energised and surprised at how effective simply changing your perspective is.
Can’t vs. Don’t want to
Be realistic Does your 5:00am yoga session keep getting ‘rescheduled’ in favour of more zz’s? Mix up the training to keep it interesting. Buggy Boogie on Monday can be followed by skateboarding on Tuesday and dog/kid walking in Wednesday… If you really can’t stick by your training schedule then it isn’t realistic.
Inspiration: Get it where you can – a motivating book or training buddy. Set yourself a reward based goal. At Fat Free Mama we set specific goals and then break them into measurable chunks (divide and conquer!). Reward and acknowledge the smaller steps and mark your arrival at slim/fit/toned/more gorgeous with a nice big fabulous aide memoire of your achievement!
